Emergency Drills

All Michigan public schools are required to conduct safety drills throughout the school year to ensure students and staff are well-prepared in the event of an emergency. Per R400.8269 of the Michigan Register, 2025 MR, Eff. May 7, 2025. schools must conduct the following safety drills annually:
 
  • A fire drill program, consisting of not less than 1 fire drill every 3 months, must be established and implemented.
  • A tornado drill program, consisting of not less than 2 tornado drills between the months of March to November, mush be established and implemented.
  • Drills for other emergency plans not listed in subrules (6) and (7) of this rule must be conducted annually.
  • A written log indicating the date and time of each drill must be maintained on file at the center.
